What is the American Dream?

Is it a sentiment or an achievable goal? While the answer varies, a majority of students who aspire to improve their lives pursue English language proficiency as a means by which to achieve their goals.

According to the Center for the Study of the American Dream at Xavier University Xavier University, most people define the American Dream in terms of family. In the latest survey, the top four definitions of the American Dream are "a good life for my family," "financial security," "opportunity," and "freedom."

While the view of the Dream has shifted for many Americans, the perception of the American Dream remains most positive among Latinos and immigrants who feel the Dream is in 'good condition.' Nearly half believe America still represents the future for them and their families.

For many, citizenship is a major milestone on their path toward achieving the Dream. Those who desire American citizenship must pass the naturalization test that demonstrates civic literacy. The swearing-in ceremony of the citizenship process is a meaningful ritual. For many, this act represents the Dream becoming a reality. Pearson provides materials for your classroom to help prepare students for the responsibilities of being a U.S. citizen and passing the test.
